Market Information

Products Permitted for Sale

All products sold at the farmer’s market must be grown, raised, or made in South Carolina. Vendors must list each product they wish to sell at the market on their application. Products not listed on the application may not be sold at the market without pre-approval from the market manager. The market manager has the authority to prohibit the sale of any product that does not conform to market standards.

Farm Fresh Products

Includes, but is not limited to, SC grown fresh fruits and vegetables, herbs, nuts, honey, dairy products, eggs, poultry, mushrooms, meats, and fish. Also included in this category are fresh flowers, nursery stock, and plants.

  • Produce vendors must be considered a bona fide farmer or grower, the BFM does not accept brokers: participants who have bought produce, plants, or flowers from a grower and do not grow anything themselves.
  • Farmers may offer approved items for resale IF those items help meet a market need and do not compete with products already available at the market. Products must be clearly labeled to reflect the farm and location where it is grown/produced. Products from other SC farms may NOT take up more than 50% of your table space.
  • Eligible farmers/growers must submit the location where crops are being grown and a list of crops intended to be sold at the market. Market staff reserves the right to inspect a vendor’s greenhouse, garden, farm, field or other place of production to verify that the produce being sold meet market qualifications.
  • Meat (poultry, beef, pork, lamb): SC Meat & Poultry registration. Vendors must maintain the product in a continuously frozen/preserved condition from the time it leaves the processing facility until it is sold at the market.
  • Meat (rabbit, quail, alligator): SCDA certification registration. Vendors must maintain the product in a continuously frozen/preserved condition from the time it leaves the processing facility until it is sold at the market
  • Fish: Must meet processed / unprocessed requirements for legal sale.
  • Eggs: SCDA egg license. Eggs must be kept at 45*F or lower and must be washed, graded, sized, and properly labeled according to USDA standards. Only new or unused cartons may be used, and cartons cannot bear another producer’s information. Display cartons must be labeled as such. Egg License Guide

Value Added Products

Products made from SC grown agricultural items and processed beyond their raw, natural state. These include: jams and jellies; pickles, relishes, hot sauce, and salsas; cider; dried fruits and vegetables; dairy products such as cheese and yogurt

  • Value-added products must adhere to SCDA labeling requirements. Labeling Guidance here
  • Value-added vendors must provide documentation of required DHEC / SCDA licenses or permits, a SC Sales Tax license and a City of Barnwell business license, OR demonstrate that the product meets the requirements of the SC Home-Based Cottage Food Production Law.   • Value-added food items NOT ALLOWABLE under the SC Home-Based Cottage Food Production law including pickles, relishes, pepper jelly, hot sauce, salsas, chow chow, chutney, dressings, flavored oils, ciders must be sent to Clemson University (864-656-9986) or another FDA-recognized process authority for product analysis, must be produced in a DHEC inspected kitchen and must meet all packaging and labeling guidelines.   • Value-added food items meeting the requirements of the SC Home-Based Cottage Food Production law DO NOT require an analysis and SC DHEC permit. These items include: jams/ jellies/ preserves made with low acid fruits, sugar and pectin only; dried fruits; dried herbs and seasonings; vinegar and flavored vinegars; boiled peanuts unpackaged or in non-vacuum sealed packaging.
Prepared Foods / Food Trucks

Made from scratch food items using ingredients not grown or raised by the vendor. Items include: breads, pastries, cookies and other baked goods; chocolates and candies; dried pasta; granola; coffee and teas; ready-to-eat food prepared partially or entirely at the market.

  • Prepared food vendors must submit and maintain a SC DHEC / SCDA permit, SC Sales Tax License and City of Barnwell Business license, or demonstrate that the product meets the requirements of the SC Home-Based Cottage Foods vendor law. See Home-Based Food Production Guidelines here.
  • Prepared food items ALLOWABLE WITHOUT a SC DHEC permit under the Home-Based Cottage Food Production law include: cakes, cookies, breads, pastries, baked goods, candies and confections that DO NOT contain custards, creams and time-temperature control fillings; baking mixes; granola; snow cones or shaved ice.   • All prepared food items must adhere to SCDA packaging and labeling requirements. (Does not pertain to Food Trucks)
  • Food Trucks must have a SC DHEC permit and City of Barnwell Business license.
Hand-Made Arts / Crafts / Goods

Original, unique and high quality items, which bring some added value to the Barnwell Farmers Market. All products must be the actual work of the crafter. Items include, but not limited to: handmade jewelry, pottery, decorations, pet accessories, knit items, photography, paintings, clothing, woodworking, bird houses etc.

  • All artisan and craft vendors require a SC Sales Tax License and City of Barnwell Business Permit
Vendor Fees & Table Assignments

The Farmers Market Manager will collect fees in advance of the market, or during the market itself. Vendors may pay by the day, month, or whole season. Full seasons paid in advance get 1 month FREE! Cash, Credit or Business Checks are accepted for fee payment.

  • Season: $200 Tuesdays & Thursdays Only (48 markets)
  • Season: $250 All Days (60 markets)

Table Assignments: Vendor placement is planned by the market. Your location will be emailed to you prior to your start date. Should you need more than a 10×10 space, you can request approval to purchase an additional space or share an additional space with another vendor.

Electrical Access: Electrical access for vendors may be requested and is available on a first come first served basis. You will be notified if we can accomodate power needs. Vendors must provide their own electrical / extension cords. All food trucks must bring a generator for power needs.

Market Rules

Market participants are required to conduct themselves in a manner that contributes to a positive shopping experience for market customers and should avoid unsuitable language and engaging in inappropriate behavior. Market participants should not leave their booths unattended during market hours. Market Management expects market participants to be honest and to conduct themselves in a courteous and friendly manner with other market participants, staff and customers.

  • The vendor must supply all their own equipment such as tents, tables, table coverings, chairs, display cases/fixtures, signs, etc. unless stated otherwise by market staff. All vendor equipment used at the market must be in a clean and safe condition. (AT THIS TIME THE BFM IS PROVIDING MARKET TABLES TO VENDORS ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVED BASIS WITH LIMITED TABLE AMOUNTS)
  • Vendors MUST arrive at their assigned space no later than 30 minutes before the market is scheduled to begin. Vendors should be set up and ready for selling 15 min prior to market opening.
  • Vendors will have 30 minutes to unload in the area closest to the market pavilion. After unloading all vehicles must be moved to designated vendor parking. NO vehicles will be allowed on the grass surrounding the market pavilion. Participants are NOT allowed to park trailers to sell out of at the farmer’s market.
  • Vendors are not allowed to sell to customers before the opening of the market. Market staff and other vendors may make purchases prior to the opening of the market.
  • Vendors are responsible for maintaining and cleaning the area around their table and chairs must be kept behind tables at all times.
  • Individuals, with knowledge of the items for sale, must be working at the table. Children (14 yr. or younger) will be allowed to sell if an adult (18 yr. or older), who is knowledgeable of the items, supervises them at all times. The minimum age for a vendor to sell by themselves is 15 years old.
  • Participants must have and use hand wipes or waterless hand sanitizer to keep their hands as clean as possible at all times. Proper hand washing techniques, as set forth in SCDHEC regulations, must be practiced at all times.
  • No selling is permitted off the back of trucks or from vehicles. Items can only be sold from market area tables.
  • Vendors must accurately represent their products to the public with proper and clear labeling and prices.
  • Vendors are responsible for collecting and remitting sales tax on all non produce items.
  • All vendors are expected to remain at the market for the duration of the market hours. Vendors may not leave the market nor start taking down their stand before market closing times unless prior arrangements have been made with the market manager or the vendor has sold out of goods.
  • No signage or pamphlets are allowed to promote activities outside the market that are not related to vendor business. This includes but is not limited to unrelated commercial businesses, controversial topics, and political and/or religious affiliations. 
  • Pets are not allowed in the market area with the exception of guide dogs.
  • City of Barnwell parks are tobacco free. Tobacco products are prohibited in market areas including table areas and parking areas.
  • Possession and use of firearms, fireworks, alcohol or illegal drugs, and/or engaging in gambling or disorderly conduct is prohibited amongst market participants, their employees, family, friends and/or customers.
  • Abusive, profane, threatening, or harassing language or actions towards City officials, Market Staff, other Participants, or Customers will not be tolerated. All Market Participants will be responsible for the action of their employees or other individuals behind their tables.

HEALing Partners staff, farmer’s market advisory committee members and the market manager reserves the right to amend, add or delete to these Rules and Regulations as necessary to carry out the operation of the Barnwell Farmers Market. Participants will be notified of any additions, deletions or amendments to the Rules and Regulations.
